As Head of Salmond College for almost six years, I have found the financial support the Foundation provides through its awards to incoming residents invaluable. For some young people, the awards have been the final piece in the puzzle, enabling them to live at the college when it would otherwise have been out of their reach. For others, the award has meant that they haven’t had to take on the burden of a part-time job during their first year of tertiary study, enabling them to focus fully on their study.
Reading the applications of the young people who apply for the awards is a special part of my role. It is often the case that applicants express significant vulnerabilities and challenges they have faced in recent years. Alongside the prospective student's application, the school reference provides further insight into the young person’s background, level of need, and the strengths they will bring to the college the following year. The Foundation can then carefully consider what level of support they can offer, and I have the privilege of being able to contact the award recipients to give them the good news.
In some cases, it is the beginning of a long-term relationship between a student and the College. Several Foundation Award recipients return to the college for a second year, and some return to work as Kaiāwhina/Residential Leaders during their later years of study to give back to the college community.
Salmond College and Knox College are privileged to have the support of the Foundation. I value the exceptional leadership of Nicola Peart and the trustees, as well as the excellent relationship we share.
Inter-college Awards Dinner

The 2025 Inter-college Awards Dinner brought together residents from across the colleges to celebrate a year of achievement, camaraderie, and friendly competition. Awards were presented recognising excellence in sport, cultural performance, and gaming events, highlighting the diverse talents and dedication of students throughout the year.
Meg Regnault won one of three individual awards across all colleges for outstanding contribution to the Inter-college Competition.
Congratulations to Meg and to all students recognised on the night for their outstanding contributions.
